INSULIN ACTION IN HEALTH AND DISEASE
Insulin is a powerful hormone that coordinates numerous metabolic pathways to maintain homeostasis. Over the last decades, we have focused on understanding how insulin controls glucose. But glucose is only one metabolite regulated by insulin. Much is still unknown, including how insulin resistance produces atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)—the major causes of illness and death in insulin resistant individuals. The mission of our lab is to define the key downstream targets of insulin relevant for disease. By providing a more complete and granular understanding of insulin action, we hope to enable precision therapies to reverse insulin resistance, restore homeostasis and prevent disease.
